Family History Book: Barrington
- The earliest form of the Barrington name is Barenton, which some say derived from the placename of a town or commune in Normandy, France. While Amy Barrington claims the name appears in Domesday Book, I was unable to find it there. Otherwise, an early reference discovered is in Testa de Nevill, dating to 1216. Dating earlier than this, however, are records cited by William Clayton and edited by G. Alan Downdes in Transactions of the Essex Archaeological Society. According to Clayton, the family origins were Saxon, with Barenton, a servant to Queen Emma, wife of King Ethelred and mother of Edward "the Confessor". This Barenton was probably the father of Randulfus de Barenton.
